Independence of the Seas Overview and AP Status 2026
Independence of the Seas is a Freedom-class cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean International, a brand of Royal Caribbean Group. Built at the Aker Finnyards (now Meyer Turku) shipyard in Turku, Finland, she was launched in 2007 and entered service in April–May 2008 after her christening in Southampton.
In terms of size, the ship measures about 154,407 gross tons, stretches roughly 1,112 feet in length with a beam around 185 feet, and typically cruises at approximately 22 knots.
Guest capacity varies by configuration, but she generally carries around 3,600–3,800 passengers at double occupancy and up to about 4,300–4,500 at maximum, supported by a crew of roughly 1,300. The ship received a major “Royal Amplified” refit in 2018 that refreshed public spaces and added new attractions.
Dining is spread across roughly a dozen-plus venues, commonly including the multi-level Main Dining Room and the Windjammer Marketplace, alongside specialty spots that on many sailings feature options like Chops Grille, Izumi, Giovanni’s/Italian concepts, Johnny Rockets, Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade, and more—expect about a dozen to 13 places to grab a bite depending on the itinerary.
Beyond dining, Independence of the Seas packs headline attractions such as the FlowRider surf simulator, The Perfect Storm waterslides, an ice-skating rink, a rock-climbing wall, mini-golf, multiple pools and whirlpools, a full spa and fitness center, youth and teen spaces, laser tag, and the bustling Royal Promenade for shopping and nightlife amenities that were enhanced in the 2018 amplification.
